Dollar General closing

NEW ULM — The Dollar General at 345 S. 20th St. in is closing for good.

No official closing day for the discount store has been given at this time. The employees of the store were only recently informed of the closure.

On Wednesday, handmade signs advertising upcoming store discounts were placed throughout the store. Signs announcing the closure are expected to go up on Thursday.

At this time no reason has been given for the store’s closure. A media inquiry was submitted to the company, but no response came forward as of Wednesday’s deadline.

Asked to comment, Mayor Robert Beussman said, “I hate to see any store leave. I worry about empty buildings.”

According to Dollar General’s website, the company operates 10,000 stores nationwide, generates $14 billion in annual revenue and includes a workforce of 90,000 employees.

Locally, the Dollar General has six employees.

Until further notice, the Dollar General is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
