NEW ULM — One hundred forty-eight students received degrees marking the completion of their training at Martin Luther College (MLC) May 12.
Graduates received 36 Bachelor of Arts (pre-seminary) degrees, 94 Bachelor of Science in Education degrees including 16 in early childhood education, five Bachelor of Science degrees and four seminary certifications.
In addition, 29 students received Master of Science in Education degrees and one student earned his Master of Science in Educational Administration degree.
The Rev. Paul Koelpin conducted the commencement service in the MLC gymnasium. An overflow crowd watched the ceremony outside the gym on a video screen.
Mark Zarling, MLC President, gave the sermon, chosen by the class. Deuteronomy 31:8 reads: “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you. He will never leave or forsake you. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged.”
Zarling referenced the Old Testament hero of faith, Moses, speaking of his background, struggles, and accomplishments.
In addition, Zarling told graduates to look for their strength and courage to face the challenges of this world. He encouraged graduates to remember as they enter their ministries, they are never alone.
“For your Messiah is with you to rescue you from doubt and discouragement. From guilt and anxiety, he rescues you with his infinite love splashed on you in the blood of his Son. Never imagine you can try ministry alone without Him,” Zarling said.
Zarling told graduates the power God exerted to raise Jesus from the dead is the same power he will unleash in human hearts through the gospel they will share.
“The Lord God who sends you always remains with you and promises, ‘I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ Don’t ever imagine ministry is a task a human can accomplish alone. Christ be with you.”
