Only six more weeks of winter!
February 4, 2010 - Kevin Sweeney
Every Feb. 2, a bunch of guys in top hats in Punxatawney, Pa., pulls a groundhog named Phil out of his lair, give him a cup of coffee, and ask him if he sees his shadow. If he does, we supposedly get six more weeks of winter.
This year, Phil did indeed see his shadow, and therefore the decree has gone forth. Winter will last six more weeks.
To which Minnesotans say, "Only six more weeks of winter? Huzzah!"
Six weeks from Feb. 2 is March 9. In New Ulm, on March 9, the average high temp is 37°, and the average low is 13°. Last year the high on March 9 was 34° and the low was 30°. Two days later, the high was 6° and the low was -4°.
Minnesotans know better than to put away their winter coats and overshoes in early March. We know Old Man Winter is heading out the door, but there's always a chance he'll turn around, like the old TV detective Columbo, and say, "Oh, just one more thing..." and hit us with a blizzard.
So, as far as Phil's prognostications go, who cares?
