That's my boy!

April 15, 2010 - Kevin Sweeney

My wife, Marijo, and I had a fun weekend. We traveled to Indiana University, in Bloomington, Ind. where our son, Michael, 27, is working on his Masters in Music Composition at the Jacobs School of Music. He was presenting his Masters recital, a concert of music he has written in the past couple of years there.

Being the parent of a musical child is kind of like being the parent of an athletic child, only the opportunities to watch the kids perform is limited. In High School, choirs or bands perform a couple of major concerts a year, while athletic teams play two or three times a week during their season. So when you get an opportunity to hear them play, you go.

It was a nice concert. Michael's music is very contemporary — don't expect recognizable rythms and melodies — but very entertaining, and the musicians were excellent.

The best part of the weekend, though, was at the reception following the concert. Michael walked in to applause from all his friends, and he gave a little speech thanking everyone, especially his girlfriend, Erin. Then he pulled a little square box out of his pocket and proposed to her. And she said yes.

Not too many parents get to be there to see their kids propose. We were there, and so were Erin's parents.

All in all, a pretty special weekend.
