Tuesday Highlights and Lowlights

August 29, 2012 - Josh Wilkening
Tuesday was a long and action packed day at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. The convention day started to 2:00PM locally and I think did not end until about 11:00PM. Some of the highlights were votes on the rules (a little late due to some transportation issues and committee deliberations), Ron and Rand Paul greeting supporters on the floor, the roll call of states whereby Mitt Romney received the Presidential nomination (and Paul Ryan for VP by acclimation). The business was followed by memorable speeches by Ted Cruz, Texas Senate candidate, former Congressman and former Obama supporter Arthur Davis, SC Gov. Nikki Haley, Ann Romney, and Keynote Chris Christie, Gov. of NJ.

Ann Romney did a great job talking about her life with Mitt and their sons. While immensely blessed, they started with humble beginnings living in a basement with two sawhorses and a board for a desk. One of the best lines of her speech went something like this: We didn't have a fairy tale marriage, we had a REAL marriage. The crowd really took to her.

Chris Christie outlined the fact that we can't continue to live beyond our means as a nation and the debt and deficit have to be dealt with. The issue can't be kicked down the road. Seniors, who may have to sacrifice, are not selfish. Teachers, who may have to sacrifice are not selfish, or is any other group that may have to share the burden as we fix the debt problem that has been accumulated and made worse in recent years.

There's more to share about yesterday, and today, but later. Off to a lunch with Euro Pacific Capital chief and noted economist Peter Schiff for a good meal with a side of Austrian School economics!
