Oktoberfest and Marathon

November 3, 2009 - Tessa Makepeace
Time is flying by. Every weekend there has been something going on. Two weekends ago, I went to Munich to visit family. My uncle, aunt, and two cousins live there. I was really glad to see them. While I was there, I got to meet some of my cousin Johannes’s friends. When I got there on Thursday he showed me around the town, Freising, where he lives and we just relaxed.

On Friday, he would have usually had school but he had a class trip to a German museum instead and I went with. The museum was all right but afterwards was more fun. We went to Oktoberfest with a few of his friends. There were thousands of people everywhere and it was fun to see. The tents are enormous and there are hundreds of booths to buy souvenirs and typical Bavarian food. I ate Weisswurst, which is a traditional sausage in southern Germany. Overall, it was really good to see my family, especially Johann because he stayed with my family all last year so I know him well.

This week we have October break, which has been really nice. My host family took me to the East Sea in the northernmost part of Germany. They have a bungalow there so we stayed there from this past Sunday and came back last night. The drive was about four hours long but it wasn’t too bad. The bungalow was actually in the small village of Damshagen about eight kilometers from the water. We went to a few other small towns the few days that we were there including Luebeck , Wismar, and Travemuende. We walked by the water and I took a lot of pictures. I was there with my host parents and my host brother and on the last night we were there his cousin came with a friend so they could go fishing. They are staying a couple of extra days. On Wednesday with my host parents I went biking about 25-30 kilometers, or 15ish miles. We saw a lot of small villages and had something to eat by the water. Then we packed up our stuff and came back last night. It was really nice but it is also nice to be back home. Funny how I call this home nowJ

This weekend should be good too. Tomorrow I am going to Berlin with some kids from my class for an event where different subjects they can study are presented. I don’t know how interesting that will be but we’ll see. I want to go with to see a little bit of Berlin because I’ve never been there. That should be fun and then on Sunday I am running a half marathon (21 kilometers) in Magdeburg. It is the sixth annual race and a lot of kids from my school are doing it. We have to at least run 13 kilometers if we want to go on the ski trip in winter in Austria. It will hopefully be good!
