The fence or the ambulance

October 5, 2013

To the editor: Which is wiser? To put a fence around the edge of a cliff, or an ambulance down in the valley? Which is better? Prevention, or cure? There’s an old poem that asks that question, and......

Gosh, MIT, what a wonderful fable?

Where's the part when the little piggies show up and hold the whole town hostage and the big bad black wolf won't negotiate with the little piggies and then the little piggies push the fences over the cliff on top of the ambulances and the little piggies squeal for joy at the mess they've made and instead of cleaning up the mess they've made they worry themselves silly about other little piggies crossing the border because they don't oink quite like the messy little piggies do.

Just wondering.

It's not the fence itself that's the problem rather the cost to construct and maintain the fence. So far all we've been able to do is make sure everyone gets their fence. The problem is the same number of people are responsible for paying for them. Same people paying plus more fences means the price of fences keep going up. We need to place our focus on creating more affordable fences for all of us. If we can achieve this then the Affordable Care Act will truly be affordable for all and not just a select few as it stands today.

Sounds like such a perfect system. Yet many cannot afford a fence, and some people with fences end up losing the houses inside those fences. Medical bills are the biggest cause of bankruptcies, even for people with insurance. Sometimes neighbors cross fences to help one another with those bills with fundraisers. Those in smaller communities are perhaps more fortunate in this regard. People are less able to coldly judge people they may see every day. Johnny may be a jerk, but his kid needs cancer treatments - here’s my donation. Those other kids I don’t know? How dare the government spend a penny of my money toward their care! Fences are not being taken out of the hands of the individual citizens who have built them on their own or with their employer’s help. The law’s purpose is to help others build fences. But surely that is difficult to understand for those whose main concern is the cost of preventing a fall, or the cost of an ambulance, rather than the value of people.
