I agree with GrandmaD, it does feel like a little bit of a guilt trip when they came out , some may have been self induced. Hopefully under the leadership of the new Pope the church starts changing ,maybe we can start picking up the young people that we have been losing. I tend to donate to the Catholic school system more heavily than the church , sometimes I think the church spends lavishly compared to the school. The school is where the teaching needs to start.

I just read all of these comments, & I hope that you do not think that careaboutsnivelrights speaks for the majority of Catholics. There are many, many, Catholics upset about the monstrosity on the hill. I certainly did not think they needed it, but I donated to it because I did feel guilted into it. No excuse, I know, but that is how I felt. I know of several older people who felt undue pressure when approached about it. The bottom line is, however, no one had to donate, so whoever did or didn't made that choice.

When I was a little girl in the Catholic school system, I was taught that the Catholic Church was the One True Church & only Catholics would go to Heaven. They don't teach that anymore & haven't for a very, very, long time. Thank God for that, & to make such a comment does not help to enhance anyone's point they are trying to convey. The most inane question posed was to MCW wondering why he was so jealous of Catholics. Seriously? I'm still laughi

How many people will be working on a daily basis in the new building?

there are going to be, nor are there now any priests residing in the new pastoral center, offices, meeting rooms, and a chapal

I also see that Holy Trinity Middle School is also not taxed, even though it is now residences for the Nuns. How is it that residences are not being taxed like every other residence in town.

This appears to apply to all church-owned houses where employees live. The houses owned by MLC are also not taxed, including the president's house, which is valued at $325,000.

In all serious, though, do parsonages not have property taxes applied? I see that the current diocese building is not taxed. I also see that the house next to the baptist church is also not taxed. I do, however, know that when a church owns a house that they rent out, that gets taxed. If the baptist church is using that house as an office, then it definitely wouldn't be taxed. My question is whether houses used to house clergy when the house is owned by the religious organization are taxed. I know that houses that are owned by the clergy are taxed.

Luther and many others like him figured out what was wrong with the Catholic church 500 years ago. It's too bad that you haven't caught on yet.

But then again, maybe the indulgences are what is paying for this building.

Question: I realize that much of this building is offices and such. Is the part where the priests reside as fancy as the outside? Is that housing portion taxed like a church parsonage is?

I am for separation , but it seems if people want to donate to a worthy cause like this, you complain, so lets just assess the people?

I'm not jealous , but I wonder why spend all this money to make something so extravagant that the average parishioner will never see the inside of. I'm sure Jesus never would have built a building like that for his residence. I don't understand your comment on taxing for it , I thought you were for separation of church and state?

Fischer is correct , if you were looking for donations on a freewill basis , you don't send people out to meet with the constituents on a face to face basis. Wireless was the issue , you hardwire the building instead, yes that can be done even though you have concrete walls. Cramped ? How many square feet per person were in the old building ? You can still do plumbing with concrete walls , big companies do it all the time. There was $1,000,000 spent on the advertising campaign to raise the money . I would like to know why this building needed to be as fancy as it is. Jesus walked around and spread the word with no temple or church, this seems eerily familiar to the priest that built the multimillion dollar home down south with "donations". Do as I say , not as I do? The church is losing a lot of young people to that philosophy.

do some research GopherState, the old building was way past its useable life, how many administrative building cant hae wireless because their walls are too thick, (concrete) to allow wireless, plumbing in the walls, so no fix when there is a problem=abandon the lines. Cramped office space the list goes on and on. It seems to me if the Catholic faithful thought it was a waste of time, they didnt need to contribute, it was a voluntary contribution, it would seem your Catholic friends with that opinion didnt contribute. So next irrelevant point you have?

If I am not mistaken, MLC didn't spend a whole lot on their chapel because a donor covered most of the cost. It also fits into the neighborhood earlier.

How does the Dioceses building work with the oath of poverty?
