I am not sure where you sourced the claim that it was rebels who shot down the plane carrying then President Habyarimana. In any event, it's almost certainly not correct. Recent forensic investigations carried out by French magistrates Poux and Trevidic demonstrate it was all but impossible for the missiles to be have been fired from rebel-held positions. Instead, it was extremist elements within the regime itself, as well as the military, who assassinated the President in the certain belief he was on the cusp of agreeing to power sharing arrangements with hitherto exiled Tutsis that was incompatible with their Hutu Power ideology.
