Nearly 8,300 cited for failing to wear seat belts

October 31, 2013
Associated Press

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Law enforcement agencies across Minnesota have cited nearly 8,300 people during a two-week crackdown on those who fail to wear seat belts.

The Click it or Ticket campaign involved 336 law enforcement agencies and the Minnesota State Patrol. The Department of Public Safety says seat belt use in Minnesota is high. Nearly 95 percent of those surveyed said they buckle up when driving or riding in a vehicle. But, officials say there is more work to be done.

KARE-TV (http://kare11.tv/16NRvyF0 ) reports 42 percent of 852 people who died in crashes from 2010 to 2012 were not wearing seat belts. And 49 percent of the unbelted deaths were motorists ages 16 to 29.
