All 20,000 evacuation orders off in San Diego fire

May 14, 2014

SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego County officials say all of the more than 20,000 evacuation orders for a wildfire burning on the edges of the city have been called off.

The county's Office of Emergency Services said the evacuation orders were lifted at about 9 p.m. Tuesday night, just a few hours after most of them were issued.

The flames that erupted in the fire-prone Rancho Bernardo area quickly grew to 700 acres, driven by hot, dry Santa Ana winds that whipped through areas dotted by hilltop estates and pricey new housing tracts.

But the threat eased as night fell and the winds died down.
