NEW ULM - Two years ago, Kathleen and Jeff Connell opened a retail boutique offering unique gifts, gourmet foods, home furnishings, interior designs, women's fashion clothing and jewelry in the historic Grand Hotel in downtown New Ulm.

More recently, they moved the business a couple blocks south to more spacious retail site at 20 N. Minnesota St.

"We've tripled our retail space and have nice upstairs offices," Kathleen Connell said.

Jeff and Kathleen Connell have relocated The Splendid Nest to 20 N. Minnesota St., in downtown New Ulm.

For shoppers with a sweet tooth, Splendid Nest offers a variety of truffles, dark chocolate and "Nut Case" toffee peanut treats.

Organic, French-milled liquid soap and bar soap with oatmeal are available.

A new men's clothing department features dress shirts, ties, mufflers and socks. The offerings for men's wardrobes complement children in the women's and children's departments.

"It's been a lot of work moving, but it's worth it," Jeff Connell said.

"We got lots of men's clothing requests so we added it," said Kathleen Connell, an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers who also does interior decorating.

One-hundred percent, hand-made, woolen area rugs are on display. A variety of samples are available.

"Our clients that include tourists and New Ulm residents often say they're surprised to find the things we have in our store," Kathleen Connell said.

She added that much of her unique inventory was discovered at retail shows in Las Vegas, Atlanta and Dallas. Meghan Rosenau is the store's fashion buyer.

"We're really excited to be in our new location. It's been a great ride so far. If we don't have something somebody wants, we'll get it," Kathleen said.

Store hours have been expanded. They are now 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 354-NEST (6378).
