To the editor:
I congratulate the City Council on choosing July 3rd to pass a very substantial pay increase for themselves and the mayor. With people's minds on the following day's July 4th holiday and celebrations, it's no wonder there has been very little outcry.
Yes, you've not had a pay increase since 2007, but your increase far exceeds that granted to city employees over the same time period. It makes a mockery of the mantra of "hold the line on city spending," that is implied by your administration in recent times.
Then again, you are showing fiscal restraint by initiating changes to the City Code to ensure that members of the Public Utility Commission no longer receive the same pay benefit as you do.
A sign of good management is the willingness to endure the same pain, in this case a very modest pay increase, that you have imposed on your employees since 2007.
Your job is to serve the public not yourselves, Regards,
