9-11 a poor analogy for US-Dakota War

August 22, 2012
The Journal

To the editor:

Regarding The Journal editorial of Sunday, Aug. 19:

To say the US-Dakota War of 1862 was this area's pioneer settlers' version of 9-11 is, in my view, a poor analogy.

The 9-11 attacks on the United States were unprovoked and unexpected.

History tells us that in 1862 many people were concerned about the deteriorating situation and appealed to the government for help. Help that did not arrive in time.

A tragedy might have been averted.
