To the editor:
With the passing of Robert 'Bob' Eichten the era of World War II becomes ever more removed. Bob was the drum major who led the New Ulm National Guard Band and artillery company down a cold January 16, 1941 Minnesota Street in New Ulm to the train depot for departure for further training in California and thence to Kodiak, Alaska.
Bob went on to serve as a combat bomber pilot in the Italian campaign, being shot down and wounded. He returned to his home town where he served our community for many years as a bank president and leader in many projects.
