WATERVILLE - The Minnesota Valley Lutheran volleyball team avenged an opening loss to Cleveland in Saturday's Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Invite by defeating the Clippers in the third-place match.
The Chargers followed their opening loss to Cleveland (9-25, 25-23, 15-13) with wins against Maple River (25-21, 25-14) and Grand Meadow (25-18, 25-15). MVL then lost to host WEM (25-20, 25-9) before winning its rematch against the Clippers (22-25, 25-12, 15-12).
Sarah Burk led the Chargers with 26 kills and nine blocks. Martha Johnston had 82 set assists and 21 digs and Allison Collum registered 52 digs and 11 service aces.
Also making strong contributions for MVL were Carlie Maasz (22 kills, 32 digs, five aces), Rachel Olson (19 kills), Rebecca Olson (17 kills) and Mariah Stein (seven aces in third-place match).
MVL (5-9-1) will next play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sleepy Eye.
