NEW ULM - Steve Kloeckl and Kristin (Beranek) Hillesheim will be inducted into the New Ulm Cathedral High School Athletic Hall of Fame at a luncheon in their honor at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at The Kaiserhoff.
Steve Kloeckl was a standout football player at running back and defensive end. During his senior year, he rushed for 672 yards, averaged six yards per carry, and scored 11 touchdowns. On defense, Kloeckl recorded 52 tackles, and led the team in sacks, tackles for loss, and fumbles caused, while earning All-Conference honors.
Kloeckl was also a standout baseball player. As a senior, he batted .456, with a .606 on-base average and an .886 slugging average.
He also led the team in runs batted in, hits, runs scored, home runs, doubles and triples. Kloeckl was an All-Conference player as a junior and senior while leading Cathedral to conference and sub-section championships both years.
Kristin Hillesheim was a three-sport athlete, and was named All-Conference six times during her career. She led the volleyball team her senior year in set assists and digs, and was second in serving points.
Hillesheim was a four-year starter in basketball, where she led the team in scoring average her junior and senior years. She scored 840 career points, and was selected to play in the Minnesota Girls All-Star Basketball Games.
Hillesheim was also an excellent softball player who finished her career with a .410 batting average. She was a three-time All-Conference selection, The Journal Area 2002 Softball Player of the Year, played in the Minnesota All-Star Softball games, and was named to the All-State Softball Team. Hillesheim was selected as the New Ulm Club/Cathedral High School Outstanding Senior Female Athlete for 2002.
