Let the refs go back to work

Teachers on strike in Chicago? The public barely cares. Nurses on strike somewhere? Try not to get sick. Transit strike? Walk or stay home.

NFL officials locked out in a labor dispute with NFL owners? IT'S AN OUTRAGE! Somebody ought to DO SOMETHING!

This is FOOTBALL they're messing with here!

The NFL has locked out its regular referees and officials in a contract dispute, and has been assuring everyone it can get by just fine with fill-ins drawn from lower level college officials. A seemingly non-stop series of mix-ups, bad decisions and blown calls is proving that it isn't working.

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh wangled a couple of extra timeouts in the game with the Vikings Sunday, but it didn't really affect the outcome of the game.

But Tuesday the NFL admitted that the fill-in refs failed to call an offensive pass interference penalty in Seattle's last gasp, Hail Mary touchdown pass to beat Green Bay Monday night. It didn't just affect the outcome of the game, but because of the call, Green Bay didn't cover the spread. News reports estimated that some $150 million in bets world wide were affected.

It is kind of sad that people care so much, but for the sake of the game and the fans' sanity, the NFL should get this mess cleared up and let the real refs get back to work.
