MLC golf falls to UM-Morris

BENSON - The Martin Luther College golf team traveled to Benson Golf Club Friday to take on Minnesota Morris in a match the Cougars won by the team scores of 328 (total strokes) to 356.

Craig Wilke was the top finisher for MLC with an 85, good for fourth amongst all competitors on the day. Andrew Schrempf shot 86, while Jacob Biebert and Charlie Crass shot 92 and 93, respectively, for MLC.

The Knights will conclude the Fall season on at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Championships, held at Deacon's Lodge Golf Club. The three-day tournament starts on Thursday.

Volleyball falls to Northwestern

ST. PAUL - The MLC volleyball team saw its five-match win streak end in a 3-0 UMAC loss at Northwestern Friday night by the scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-14.

The Knights rallied in the first set after falling behind 6-0 to tie the score at 19-19, but the Eagles scored six of the final seven points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, MLC built a 14-9 lead in the early going, but NWC rallied to tie the game at 17-17, and once again closed with a flurry as it won the second set 25-18.

NWC closed the match in the third, once again breaking open a close set. The Eagles held a two-point lead at 13-11 midway through the set, but finished the match on a 12-3 run.

Rachel Hein was the MLC leader with 10 kills and four blocks. Leah Nass added five kills and two blocks. Jennifer Draeger and Alex Anthon each finished with eight digs for the Knights.

With the loss, MLC dropped to 2-1 in conference, while Northwestern improved to 11-7 on the season and 2-1 in UMAC competition.

The Knights will return to action at 1 p.m. today when they travel to North Central.

Women's soccer wins

ASHLAND, Wis. - The MLC women's soccer team jumped on Northland early on the way to a 5-1 win Friday in UMAC action.

The Knights broke a scoreless tie in the 15th minute on a goal by Bethany Schultz, and then scored twice more in the next six minutes on goals by Hannah Mattek and Schultz to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

After Northland scored in the 31st minute to cut the lead to 3-1, MLC's Rachel Lindwurm scored late in the first half to push the lead back to three at 4-1 going into the half.

Lauren Maertz added the final tally for MLC late in the second half to clinch the win.

Keely Keese was the goalkeeper for the Knights, stopping three of the four shots she faced.

MLC improved to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action today at St. Scholastica.

Men's soccer wins

ASHLAND, Wis. - The MLC men's soccer team came back from some tough recent losses to put on a strong performance in a 3-1 win over Northland Friday.

The Knights took an early lead on a goal by Stephen Roekle in the 23rd minute of play. Ryan Lemke took over the offense from there scoring twice to give the Knights a 3-0 edge early in the season half. The first was off a pass from Tyler Prekop in the 38th minute, while the second was off a corner kick in the 48th minute.

In goal, Eric Hahn stopped 9-of-10 shots to earn the win.

With the win, MLC improved to 2-7 on the season and 1-4 in UMAC play and the Knights are at St. Scholastica today.

MLC women cross country finish fourth

WINONA - The MLC women's cross country team finished fourth at St. Mary's Friday with the help of a fourth place finish by sophomore Emilee Koltz.

Koltz took fourth with a time of 24:43.4, about 30 seconds behind the winner.

Joining her in the top 20 was Robin Nommensen, who took 17th after running 25:23.2.

Other finishers for MLC included Brooke King (31st place), Hannah Hackbarth (37th) and Amanda Walther (41st).

Men's cross country finishes sixth

WINONA - The MLC men's cross country team finished sixth at the St. Mary's Friday night.

Grey Davis had the top time for MLC at 29:05.2, good for 30th place at the event. Noah Willitz joined him in the top 40 with a time of 29:32.3.

Other finishers for MLC at the event included Ben Birner (51st place), Daniel Stelljes (55th) and James Schuette (56th).

MLC will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Wartburg.
