OLIVIA - By a 3-2 vote, Renville County commissioners recently approved a resolution to apply for Minnesota Parks & Trails Legacy funds to help buy land for an off-highway vehicle park.
Commissioner Paul Setzephandt of Bird Island cast the swing vote on the park that would be built on 272 acres of land in the Minnesota River Valley, in sections 22 and 23 of Sacred Heart Township. Setzephandt said he may vote against the project later, but he wanted to see the plans first.
Commissioners LaMont Jacobson of Sacred Heart Township and Bob Fox of Franklin voted for the project. Commissioners Ralph Novotny of Hector and John Stahl of Olivia voted against it.
If the application for $821,338 in Parks & Trails funds is approved by the state next year, grant funds - along with $150,000 in applied-for federal recreation funds - would be used to buy 272 acres of land to develop a park estimated to cost $1.3 million.
If funds are approved, the park would be designed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the University of Minnesota Center for Changing Landscape.
