One thing was clear in the League of Women Voters Candidate Forum held Tuesday in New Ulm. In our local legislative races, we have some good candidates and good choices.
Rep. Paul Torkelson pointed out at the forum that last election he didn't have an opponent. This year he has two. James Kanne, the DFL-endorsed candidate from Franklin, and Jerry Pagel, from New Ulm, will offer some stiff competition for the incumbent.
Tedd Suss, the DFL challenger, and Sen. Gary Dahms, the incumbent, had a very spirited debate. They were both sharp, combative, prepared and informed. This will be a tough campaign over the next four weeks.
It has not always been so in past legislative elections. We have been fortunate to have strong, able legislators from the Republican party, and the DFL has, at times, had a hard time finding a strong challenger, if they could find anyone at all.
That is different this year. This is going to be an exciting election year for local legislative races.
We also appreciate the work done by the League of Women Voters in New Ulm. Next Tuesday New Ulm City Council candidates will be featured, and on Oct. 23, District 88 candidates will face off. Local voters are the beneficiaries of these forums
