Chargers shut out Rebels in finale

WELLS - Minnesota Valley Lutheran blanked United South Central in nonconference football action Wednesday.

Ryan Grunke scored MVL's first touchdown on a one-yard run in the first quarter to make it 6-0. Kris Goetzke scored a 26-yard touchdown in the second quarter and Grunke's run on the two-point conversion made it 14-0 at halftime.

The Chargers added to the lead on Matthew Tessmer's 10-yard run for the final margin.

MVL awaits seedings for the Section 2A playoffs, which begin Tuesday.

Madelia 28, Randolph 26

RANDOLPH - Madelia defeated Randolph in nonconference football action Wednesday.

For Madelia, Brian Forstner had a 72-yard kickoff return and later Devin Ulmen threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-14 at halftime.

Adam Cooling had a 38-yard touchdown run and he eventually scored the game-winning touchdown on a two-yard run.

Madelia opens Section 2, nine-man action on Tuesday.

Springfield 28, GFW 20

SPRINGFIELD-Springfield defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in nonconference football action on Wednesday night.

GFW jumped to an early 8-0 lead in the first quarter before Springfield's Carter Erickson returned a punt 56 yards in the second quarter.

After GFW led 14-8 at halftime, Springfield's Zach Wells had a 54-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up for good.

Zach Wells finished up with 103 yards rushing and one touchdown on 13 carries for the Tigers while Lance Briard led Springfield's defense with 15 tackles and two sacks on the night.

GFW was led by Tony Weber, who had 109 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

The Tigers (6-2) and Thunderbirds (2-6) will both play on Tuesday in the playoffs.

Nicollet 49,

Alden-Conger 14

ALDEN - Nicollet secured the Southern Confederacy East division title on Wednesday night with a win over Alden-Conger.

Nicollet was led offensively by the Elliot brothers. Tanner Elliot finished with 70 yards rushing and one touchdown while Dalton Elliot completed 19-of-38 passes for 335 yards and scored five touchdowns, four of which were through the air.

The Raiders were led on defense by Lucas Gens, who had three tackles and two sacks on the night and scored on a 55-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

The Raiders (8-0) and Knights (0-8) will prepare for playoff football next week.
