Sign stealing a sign of intolerance

October 27, 2012
The Journal

To the editor:

Judging from the many letters to the editor this election season there appears to be no end of healthy debate regarding the state amendment to uphold traditional marriage or not and regarding other topics that will have long lasting consequences for our nation, our community, and for the individual freedoms that each of us holds dear.

Most of us are deeply thankful for the freedom to debate and speak openly about topics that are near and dear to our hearts. There are a few among us, however, who choose to silence opposing viewpoints through judgmental insinuations and belittling comments and by stealing yard signs that belong to the opposition. We have now had 3 "Vote Yes" marriage signs stolen from in front of our house and this last incident has included the theft of other "Vote Yes" signs up and down neighboring streets. Numerous other acquaintances in other parts of New Ulm have suffered the same injustice making this more of a pattern than isolated incidents.

Could it be that those who demand tolerance for all people and lifestyles could use a lesson in Tolerance? Respect for the rights of others? Maybe it's just my old fashioned upbringingBut I always thought tolerance was a two way street.
