WINTHROP - After a bit of a slow start, No. 2 seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop did not have any problems with No. 7 seeded Yellow Medicine East, sweeping it 25-18, 25-17, 25-11 in a Section 3AA, North Sub-Section playoff volleyball match.

GFW committed some unforced errors in the beginning of the first set which allowed YME to match it point for point. With the score tied 10-10, the Thunderbirds went on a 10-1 run to take control of the set, and they went on to take set one 25-18.

"I think we somewhat overlooked (YME), but we finished strong and that's all that matters," GFW senior Eve Bleick said.

The Thunderbirds fell behind early in the second set, and they were trailing YME 11-14 before GFW head coach Chris Wortz decided to take a timeout to have a word with her girls. GFW responded well coming out of the timeout, outscoring YME 15-3 for the rest of the set.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to an early lead in the third set, and they cruised to a victory by winning set three 25-11.

Erin McDurmont led the Thunderbirds in kills with 10. Morgan Wenninger and Edie Beranek each had seven kills on the night.

Bleick led the team with 15 digs, while Beranek and Sydney Fromm each added 11 digs.

GFW (18-12) takes on sixth seeded Montevideo at home in a Section 3AA, North Sub-Section semi-final match on Tuesday.

"It feels good to get that first playoff win," Bleick said. "Hopefully we can keep it going on Tuesday."
