ST. PAUL - Martin Luther College outside hitter Rebecca Engelbrecht was named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her play in helping MLC to a 3-0 week to close the regular season.
Engelbrecht, who has won Offensive Player of the Week twice this season, won the award for defense after averaging 3.64 digs and a team-best 1.09 blocks per set.
In the Knights' win over St. Scholastica Friday night, Engelbrecht led the team with 23 digs and eight blocks to help MLC secure the third seed in the UMAC Postseason Tournament.
Engelbrecht and the Knights will open the UMAC Tournament at 7 p.m. tonight in a match at St. Scholastica.
Buch honored in men's soccer
ST. PAUL - MLC men's soccer player Kaleb Buch was named UMAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance last weekend in helping the Knights to a 1-1 record.
Buch scored three goals in MLC's 7-0 win over Northland Saturday, and also assisted on the Knights' lone goal in Friday's 2-1 loss to St. Scholastica.
Buch finished the season with a team-best six goals and tied for the team lead with 14 points.
His three goals Saturday also gave him 20 in his career for MLC, becoming the first MLC player to score at least 20 goals in a career since Philip Kurbis (2005-08).
The Knights finished the season with a record of 3-15 overall and 2-12 in UMAC play.
Olson honored in football
ST. PAUL - MLC running back Matthew Olson was named UMAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in MLC's 30-27 win over MacMurray last weekend.
Olson finished the game with 39 carries for 212 yards and caught four passes for 54 yards and one touchdown.
Olson was also named to the Division 3 Football Team of the Week for his performance and became the third player on the team this season (joining Luke Rothe and Josh Rathje) to score at least one touchdown passing, rushing and receiving.
Olson and the Knights will finish the season at 1 p.m. Saturday when they host Crown.
