To the editor:
To start, I would like to congratulate all of the incumbent City Councilors running in the election. I also want to thank both of the other two challengers for stepping up and throwing their names in the hat! Someone commented to me after the election that not too many people are willing to put themselves out there like that, and I have to agree. But it was my pleasure to run and it was a great experience. Thanks to Les Schultz for a top notch campaign.
I want to thank all of the voters in Ward 3, particularly all of those folks who first encouraged me to run and then gave me such great support during the campaign. Starting with a good friend, Erin Depew, for designing our door hangers, to everyone who put a sign in their yard or just gave words of encouragement. You know who you are and I appreciate every one of you. I want to especially thank my wife, Kim Hanson, and my kids, Jacob and Brooke. They really put in a lot of time and effort (not to mention several miles!) walking around door hanging and talking to folks. They were great sports and a huge support. I've been blessed with the best family ever!
I met a lot of great people and it would have been my honor to represent you on the City Council. I know that the current City Council, and particularly, Les Schultz will continue to do an exemplary job representing each of their Wards. But at the same time, I hope they look at the returns and realize that in each of the Wards with challengers, almost half of the people were looking for a change. I would encourage the City Council to explore some of the ideas that we challengers brought to the table, as they are obviously popular with large sections of New Ulm. If they want some volunteer help to explore these possibilities, I know there are quite a few people in town who would be willing to help, myself included. Let's not shut the door on these ideas without some meaningful discussion!
Thanks again for a wonderful experience. I kept all of my signs so who knows, maybe in four years we'll try it again!
