Thanksgiving is coming quickly, and though the campaign season just past would have us believe that this nation is teetering on the brink of ruin and only (your candidate here) is capable of pulling us back from the edge, there are still plenty of things for which we can give thanks. Here are just a few:
We live in a country where people can cast their votes in fair and free elections, and select their government leaders and representatives with no one looking over their shoulders. There are nations where voting can be dangerous, or where the outcome is preordained by the despot currently in power.
We live in a country where, when your presidential candidate doesn't win, you can voice your wish to secede from the union and all anyone will do is laugh at you.
We live in a country where we have people living in poverty, but even our poor have a standard of living that millions of people in the world can only dream about. Where society does care about the less fortunate, and does something for them.
People talk a lot about what is wrong with our country, but there are a lot more things that we do right, too. Look at the community around you, the people around you, and see if you can't find a lot more to be thankful for than sorry for.
And then, give thanks.
