Lawrence Roiger, age 94, of Fairfax, passed away Monday, December 3, 2012, at Seasons Redwood Area Hospital Hospice in Redwood Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, December 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax, with Father Jeffrey Horejsi officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, Dec.6, from 9-10:15 a.m. at the Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel.

Lawrence George Roiger was born on September 11, 1918, in Springfield, MN. He was the son of Anton and Anna (Wersal) Roiger. Lawrence was baptized and confirmed in his youth. He received his education at country schools in Redwood and Brown Counties.

On June 20, 1941, he entered the armed services and spent four and a half years serving his country during World War II. Lawrence was awarded the Silver Star Medal for risking his life to save a fellow soldier while serving on Negros in the Pacific Islands. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was Honorably Discharged on September 27, 1945. He moved back to Springfield and started farming.

On May 10, 1948, he was united in marriage to Adeline Saffert. They farmed and raised four children, Marilyn, Susan, Cindy, and Kevin. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in May.

Lawrence was a faithful member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church where he served as a member of the Parish Council and School Board. He was the treasurer for Wellington Township for 40 years and also a member of the VFW Post #8459 and American Legion Post #205 in Fairfax.

Lawrence enjoyed reading and traveling. His passion was farming, and he still helped with the harvest at the age of 92. He was cared for by his wife for one and a half years while he battled cancer. Lawrence was admitted to the Season's Assisted Living Center in Redwood Falls, December 3, 2012, and passed away the same day at the age of 94 years. Blessed be his memory.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Adeline Roiger of Fairfax, MN; children, Marilyn Rankin and her husband, Doug of Lenexa, KS, Susan Quinn and her husband, Richard of Bloomington, MN, Cindy Schweiss and her husband, Leo of Fairfax, MN, and Kevin Roiger of Fairfax, MN; grandchildren, Brice Rankin, Travis Schweiss, Nicole Fuller and her husband, Josh, Christopher Quinn and his wife, Kelly, Kelly Quinn, and Dana Quinn; great-grandchildren, Darien Rankin and Austin Fuller; sister, Betty Nachreiner of Sleepy Eye, MN; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Anna Roiger; brothers, Gerald, Wilbert and Glendon Roiger.
