MARSHALL - With the Sleepy Eye girls' basketball team's best player in foul trouble during its Southwest Minnesota State University Holiday Classic game against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Friday, the Indians needed a spark from their young bench.
Sophomore Kaylee Hillmer provided the boost the team needed, helping Sleepy Eye overcome a five-point deficit late in the game by scoring seven unanswered points over a three-possession stretch to give the Indians the lead for good.
Freshman Josie Schieffert had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Sleepy Eye. Sophomore Justine Gonzalez added 11 points and five rebounds.
The Indians (3-7) will next play on Jan. 4 at Cedar Mountain/Comfrey.
Rockford 68, Springfield 49
ST. JAMES - Jordan Weeding's game-high 20 points helped Rockford defeat Springfield in the championship game of the St. James Holiday Tournament on Friday.
Jordan Salonek led the Tigers with 16 points.
Springfield (5-5) will host Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Jan. 4.
MVL 56, Canby 52
ST. CLAIR - Minnesota Valley Lutheran advanced to the consolation championship game at the St. Clair Holiday Tournament by defeating Canby on Friday.
Mariah Schoof led the Chargers with 19 points, with Larissa DeRousse adding 15 points. Anna Munsen had a team-high 14 rebounds for MVL.
Morgan Merritt led Canby with 17 points.
The Chargers (9-1) will play Tri-City United at 7:45 p.m. today for the consolation championship.
