Ruben Bergs

WINTHROP - Ruben Bergs, age 86, of Winthrop, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, with Reverend Paul Tessmer officiating. Interment will be in the Winthrop Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Ruben John Albert Bergs was born on May 28, 1926, at home in New Auburn Township, Sibley County, Minnesota. He was the son of Herman and Marie (Frauendienst) Bergs. Ruben was baptized as an infant on June 27, 1926, and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth on April 6, 1941, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Auburn. He received his education at country school.

On Nov. 4, 1948, Ruben was united in marriage to Geraldine Eggert, by Pastor Kuehner, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Transit Township, retiring in 1995. Ruben and Geraldine were blessed with one son, Daryl. They shared 64 years of marriage.

Ruben was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, and served as an usher for about 50 years.

Ruben enjoyed fox and pheasant hunting, fishing and yard work. He loved to tell stories, visit the Winthrop elevator, John and Bill at the garage and the folks at Crop Production. Ruben especially loved spending time with his family, and thought the world of them. Ruben will be especially missed by his dog, Ginger. Blessed be his memory.

Ruben is survived by his wife, Geraldine Bergs of Winthrop; son, Daryl Bergs and his wife, Kathy of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Mishell Lemons and her husband, Brandon, and their children, Mikias and Tehila; and Bret Bergs and his wife, Joanna; nieces, other relatives and friends.

Ruben was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Marie Bergs; grandparents; and sister, Rosella Wolter.
