ASHLAND, Wis. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to three by beating Northland 56-49 Friday night in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action.
The Knights led much of the way, trailing twice for a combined 35 seconds of game action in the first half, and were able to keep a small but comfortable lead for much of the game.
MLC trailed 12-11 with 9:33 to play in the first half, but closed the half on an 18-9 run to take a 29-21 lead into the break. Hannah Hackbarth paced the Knights in the opening stanza, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.
The Lumberjills made a run to start the second half, cutting the MLC lead to 37-36 midway through the half, but the Knights responded with a 12-0 run, holding Northland scoreless for more than six minutes before holding on down the stretch for the win.
Hackbarth finished as the leading scorer for MLC with 17 points. Joining Hackbarth in double figures was Alex Anthon, who scored 12 points and added six rebounds. Hannah Rothe led MLC on the glass with seven rebounds.
MLC (8-12, 6-3) plays at 3 p.m. today at St. Scholastica.
Men win second straight
Ashland, Wis. - The MLC men's basketball team grinded out a win in a defensive struggle at Northland Friday night, beating the Lumberjacks 70-63 in UMAC action.
Neither team shot the ball well, with MLC finishing with a shooting percentage of 39.7 compared to 36.4 percent from Northland.
The Knights did take advantage of an advantage inside, however, outscoring the Lumberjacks 26-16 inside the paint.
Northland jumped out to an early 7-4 lead, but the Knights took command of the game with a 17-2 run, covering a stretch of six minutes where the Lumberjacks were unable to make a field goal.
Galen Holzhueter finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Luke Rothe added 12 points, while Kaleb Buch led the Knights with nine rebounds, three steals and four assists to go with six points.
MLC (4-16, 3-6) plays at 5 p.m. today at St. Scholastica.
