NEW ULM - James "Jim" Gaard, 73, of New Ulm, died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 20, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Debra R. Bergstrand officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Wednesday.
Minnesota Valley Funeral Home, NORTH CHAPEL, in New Ulm is in charge of the arrangements.

James is survived by his wife, Barbara Gaard of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Stacey and Ric Deopere of Brooklyn Park; sons and daughters-in-law, Todd and Denise Gaard of Detroit Lakes, Bradley and Michelle Gaard of New Ulm; grandchildren, Amanda Deopere, Ryan Gaard, Devin Gaard, Chelsea Jahner; five great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Valoris and Harold Nuessmeier of Waseca; brothers and sister-in-law, Virgil and Hazel Gaard of Oregon, Wisconsin, Jerry Gaard of Blaine.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, Elmer Barnes.
James Allen Gaard was born on November 21, 1939 in Elmore to Conrad and Seraphine (Larson) Gaard. He graduated from Cleveland High School. On December 6, 1958 he was united in marriage to Barbara Barnes at the Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter. James worked at Kraft Foods in New Ulm for thirty-five years and then worked an additional seven years at Kraft as a consultant on projects. He enjoyed camping, deer hunting, fishing, restoring old cars, attending NASCAR races, woodworking, and traveling in their RV. James was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.
