ROSEMOUNT - The Martin Luther College softball team opened its season with two losses in a doubleheader against Macalester by the scores of 13-3 and 11-2 Tuesday at the Irish Sports Dome.
The Knights dropped game one 13-3 after the Scots jumped out to a big lead early. Macalester scored twice in the first inning, and then added seven runs in the second inning and four more in the third inning to complete the scoring.
MLC pitcher Laura Miller took the loss, allowing 11 earned runs on 10 hits and six walks in four innings of work.
Andrea Biedenbender opened the scoring for MLC with a solo home run in the second inning. The Knights scored their other two runs on a double by Maggie Schultz in the third inning.
Amanda Fogle led MLC's hitters with two hits in three at bats.
MLC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game two, but the Scots scored 11 unanswered runs to finish the sweep with an 11-2 win.
Amber Krause and MacCartney Mendolla gave MLC the lead with RBI singles in the first inning to score Madeline Scott and Biedenbender.
That would be the end of the scoring for the Knights, however, while Macalester scored once in the second, twice in the third, and four times in both the fourth and fifth innings off MLC starter Kathryn Marquardt.
Marquardt allowed 11 runs in the game on 18 hits in five innings. She struck out two and walked one.
MLC's record is now 0-2 after the two losses, while Macalester improved to 4-2 on the season.
The Knights will return to action on Thursday when they play in a two-day tournament hosted by North Central held at the Plymouth Creek Dome. The action gets underway at 8:45 a.m. against Presentation.
