OLIVIA - A Hector man who collided with a Renville County squad car while driving a stolen van on Saturday evening died Monday of injuries sustained in the accident, according to information from the Renville County Sheriff's office.

Cody A. Kirgiss, age 22, of Hector, died after being airlifted from the accident scene to North Memorial Medical Center, in Robbinsdale.

The squad car, a 2013 Ford Police Interceptor SUV, and the van that Kirgiss was driving were total losses.

The accident occurred after Olivia Police received a report that Kirgiss was seen driving recklessly in the city in a stolen van. An officer pursued Kirgiss, and he refused to stop despite activation of emergency lights and siren. Kirgiss accelerated in the city and continued westbound on Highway 212.

A deputy who was eastbound on Highway 212 stopped his squad car on the shoulder with the intention of deploying a tire deflation device to deter the Kirgiss van. Before the device could be deployed, Kirgiss crossed over the center line and the opposing lane of traffic and struck the unoccupied squad car head-on. The squad car was pushed into a third vehicle that was also parked on the shoulder of the road.

Kirgiss's van rolled onto its side and caught fire. The Olivia officer and Renville County deputies tried to enter the vehicle while bystanders attempted to put out the fire. After the Olivia Fire Department extricated Kirgiss, he was airlifted by North Air Care from the scene to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where he later died.

The Olivia officer and a Renville County deputy were treated at the Renville County Hospital and Clinics for smoke and fire extinguisher chemical inhalation and were released.
