WEST ST. PAUL - The Martin Luther College softball team swept a pair of games at its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference crossover at the West St. Paul Dome Tuesday, defeating Minnesota-Morris 8-5 in Game 1, and Crown 5-1 in Game 2.
In the first game, the Knights jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after three innings, scoring once in the first and three more times in the third. Madeline Scott, Andrea Biedenbender and Amber Krause each drove in runs for MLC during that stretch.
UMM came back, however, scoring twice in the fifth, and then taking the lead with three runs in the sixth off MLC starting pitcher Kathryn Marquardt, who lasted 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits before giving way to Laura Miller for the final 1 2/3 innings.
Trailing by one going into the top of the seventh, Krause tied the game 5-5 with a double that scored Scott from second base. MLC then took the lead on groundouts by MacCartney Mendolla and Morgan Kumbier, and then added an insurance run with the help of a Cougar error to finish with eight runs.
Miller allowed just one hit in 1 2/3 innings to earn the win, improving her record to 6-5 on the season.
The Knights fell behind early against Crown, but recovered to beat the Storm 5-1 in game two.
Miller went this distance on the mound for MLC in this game, allowing one run on five hits and one walk in 7 innings of work to move her record to 7-5 this season.
Crown scored its lone run in the top half of the second, but the Knights took the lead in the third on RBI doubles from Krause and Mendolla.
MLC added one run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kumbier, and then finished the scoring with two in the sixth on doubles from Biedenbender and Krause.
With the two wins, MLC improved its record to 15-9 on the season and 9-4 in league play.
The Knights are scheduled to play next on Friday when they hope to get back outdoors at the UMAC crossover weekend hosted by MLC.
