Indians, Tigers lead the way

NEW ULM - The Sleepy Eye girls golf team is looking to get back to the state tournament after qualifying last year.

On Tuesday, the Indians looked like a team to take seriously once again once the section golf tournaments take place as they won the second leg of the Tomahawk Conference girls golf meet at New Ulm Country Club.

The Indians had a team score of 388, 14 strokes better than second place New Ulm Cathedral (402). Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (404), Springfield (420), Wabasso?(425), Minnesota Valley Lutheran (445), Sleepy Eye St. Mary's (450), Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (464) and Cedar Mountain/Comfrey (Inc.) rounded out the competition.

The Indians had three players in the Top 10, led by Lauren Laffen's 85. Laffen was second behind BLHS's Carly Schmalz (83). Cathedral's Brooke Dummer (94), Sleepy Eye's Karrah Remus (95), St. Mary's Mackenzie Schutz (97), CM/C's Courtney Nelsen (98), Wabasso's Briana Jenniges (98), Sleepy Eye's Emily Curtis (98), Springfield's Callie Wersal (99), Springfield's Shelby Schultz (100) and Wabasso's Jenna Henriksen (100) were the top scorers in Tuesday's round.

On the boy's side, Springfield led the way with a team score of 359. BLHS was second with a 361, followed by St. Mary's (371), CM/C (394), Sleepy Eye (403), GFW (432), Cathedral (454), Wabasso (454) and MVL (458).

Springfield's Taylor Frank led the way with an 84 and St. Mary's senior Kansas Adams was second with an 85. Springfield's Christopher Kretsch (86), BLHS's Jon Burgstahler (86), CM/C's Tristan Pietig (87), BLHS's Jack Broderius (87), St. Mary's Ryan Heinrichs (91), Sleepy Eye's Wyatt Kosmatka (93), BLHS's Kyle Mellies (94) and BLHS's Alex Girodat (94) led the way individually.

The third leg of the Tomahawk Conference meet is Monday in Sanborn and Springfield
