HONU starts ‘Lose it to win it’ challenge

June 4, 2013
The Journal

NEW?ULM - Heart Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm Project (HONU) has launched its newest community health challenge, "Lose it to Win it: Weigh in, New Ulm." The free 12-month community health challenge is designed to help the community members lose weight or maintain weight and provide an opportunity to be rewarded for making healthful lifestyle choices.

The community prize that can be earned is $100,000 worth of new outdoor fitness equipment for New Ulm parks and bicycle improvements such as bicycle racks, bicycle lanes and signage. The community prize is possible due to a grant from UnitedHealth Group and a donation from the New Ulm Medical Center Foundation.

As soon as 2,500 participants register, a $25,000 donation will be made toward the $100,000 community prize. After that, when participants in the challenge lose weight or maintain their weight, each person will individually earn community prize dollars that will go toward the prize.

How the challenge works:

For people who are overweight, the challenge encourages a goal of losing 10 pounds during the 12-month challenge. Those already at a healthy weight should aim to maintain their weight.

After registering for the challenge, participants will start receiving motivational tips via text or email. They will also get a tracking log with information on the challenge and how to track their points and weight, along with a wristband. Throughout the challenge, participants will earn points for different healthful activities and behaviors. If they earn enough points in a month, they will eligible for a monthly drawing for prizes donated by local businesses and organizations.

Helpful information and tips are available at www.heartsbeatback.org/loseit and on the challenge website, participants will have access to an online health guide, workout podcasts, a success journal, quizzes, phone and email access to personal trainers and more. On at least a quarterly basis, participants will need to weigh in at the kiosk and track their weight loss progress.

Registration

Registration is open through Oct. 31. There is a two-step registration process. Participants should first register online by visiting www.heartsbeatback.org and clicking on the LOSE IT to WIN IT logo on the homepage.

The second step is to do an initial weigh in at one of the challenge's new HEALTHspot kiosks at New Ulm Medical Center (emergency room entrance), New Ulm Recreation Center or Hy-Vee (near the pharmacy consultation area). Participants will need to enter their user name and password from their online registration to access their account. Then they will weigh in at the kiosk to get their starting weight, have their photo taken, and complete the registration process.

Attend a registration

help session

Those who would like help in registering for the challenge can attend a registration event where Heart of New Ulm staff will help them complete the two-step registration process and answer questions about how the challenge works.

People are encouraged to register online first at www.heartsbeatback.org if possible and then come to the session to weigh in. For those who cannot register online in advance, please allow 45 minutes to fully complete the two-step registration during the registration event.
