BECKER - Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart's Carly Schmalz and Sleepy Eye's Lauren Laffen are tied for eighth place at the Class A State Girls Golf meet after Tuesday's action.
"It feels great to be back again this year," Laffen said. "I putted really well today, and I'm hoping for another good day on the greens tomorrow."
On the other end of the spectrum, Carly Schmalz was not so impressed with her last hole of the day.

"That wasn't a good way to end the day," Schmalz said. "It was still a good round, though."
Both shot an 87 and they are tied for eighth with Blooming Prairie's Anna Noble. Russel-Tyler-Ruthtons' Hannah Kruger is the overall leader with an 80 and Southwest Christian's Christine Piwnica is in second with an 83.
Badger-Greenbush/Middle River leads the team event with a score of 369 and Legacy Christian Academy has a score of 376. Wabasha-Kellogg is third with a 385. Section 2A champion United South Central is fourth with a 389.
Sleepy Eye's Emily Curtis and Springfield's Shelby Schultz are also in the mix as both shot a 97 on the first day, good enough for 29th overall.
Sleepy Eye's Karrah Remus fired a 99, which is 36th overall, and New Ulm Cathedral's Brooke Dummer shot a 102, which is 45th overall.
"I think I did well for day one, but looking forward to another shot at the course tomorrow," Dummer said. "Getting into state in a playoff kind of gave me a competitive edge and boosted my spirits a bit."
In the boys action, Mille Lacs is holding a solid lead after day one with a team score of 310. Legacy Christian Academy is trailing behind Mille Lacs by 20 strokes, sitting at 330 for the day.
Grant Exsted of Mille Lacs leads after day one with his 68 strokes on the day. Jordan Henry of Madelia shot a 77 on day one, and was tied for eighth overall at the end of day one. His teammate, Mike Sorenson, shot an 81.
Christopher Kretsch of Springfield shot an 80, which is 15th overall after day one.
