MINNEAPOLIS - David Nelson, the son-in-law of New Ulm Mayor Bob Beussman, received the 2013 Good Samaritan Award from the American Red Cross this month for his quick response and life-saving action when a coworker suffered a serious heart attack.
Nelson, who is married to Erin Beussman, currently lives in Fridley. He works the third shift for UPS in Minneapolis. Last September, he was leaving for a lunch break around 3:30 a.m. when a coworker collapsed in front of him. The man fell onto a car and then hit his head on the pavement.
Nelson initially thought the man had knocked himself out. It was later learned that the man suffered a severe cardiac arrest, and would subsequently suffer two more attacks in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
David Nelson, son-in-law of New Ulm Mayor Bob Beussman, received the 2013 Good Samaritan Award this month from the American Red Cross for saving a coworker who suffered three cardiac arrests.
Nelson, with the help of coworker Teresa Hazeman, found the man lacked a pulse and began performing CPR until paramedics arrived. Hazeman called 911 for assistance.
Nelson's quick response was deemed vital in saving the man's life.
"It was weird. Some part of my brain just kicked in and told me this is what I have to do," said Nelson, "I never imaged I would end up doing something like this."
Nelson and Hazeman, received the 2013 American Red Cross Heroes Award and were honored with the 2013 Good Samaritan award at the 5th Annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on June 6 at Target Field. Because General Mills helped sponsor the award ceremony, Nelson and Hazeman each received a special box of Wheaties with their picture on it.
Nelson also received recognition from the City of Albertville and Liberty Mutual, which works with his UPS branch.
