NEW ULM - Jory Dove's throwing error with one out in the top of the sixth inning allowed Andy Reiter to score with the eventual game-winning run as Fairmont topped New Ulm Legion Gold 5-4 Monday night at Mueller Park.
Jay Ruen got the win for Fairmont in relief of starter Jordan Voss. Ruen pitched the final four innings and did not allow a run and scattered two hits.
Chase Meyer took the loss for Gold (5-4). He was charged with five runs an seven hits in his 5 1/3 innings of work.
Levi Becker led Fairmont with three hits with Ryan Noll adding two hits. Noll also drove in two runs.
Drew Pfaff paced Gold with three hits with Grant Kannegiesser contributing two hits
"I think that offensively we had our opportunities," Gold coach Bob Weier said. "We just did not get that clutch hit. A prime example is the seventh inning when we had runners on first and third with two outs and all we needed was a base hit to tie the game up and who knows what would have happened."
What did happed was a game-ending groundout off of the bat of Meyer.
But Gold also had scoring chances earlier in the game that probably would have made Meyer's at-bat meaningless.
In the first inning, Tim Kehren and Judd Davis started the bottom of the first with consecutive singles. But Voss retired Kannegiesser and Meyer before Kehren was out trying to steal third for the final out of the inning.
And in the second inning with one out Drew Pfaff singled and Jory Dove was hit by a pitch. Nate Palmer followed by grounding into an inning-ending double play.
Making that hurt even more was that Gold fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first when Post 32 scored. Luke Becker tattooed a Meyer knuckleball for a double to deep right field. Levi Becker reached on a one-out infeld single that scored Luke Becker. Ryan Noll's double to left made it a 2-0 Post 32 lead.
Fairmont upped its lead to 3-0 in the third inning. Becker singled and stole second. A walk to Ruen and a successful double steal added a run.
But Gold took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third. Kehren walked and swiped second. He scored on an error by Fairmont shortstop Spencer Chirpich. Kannegiesser singled before Davis scooted home on a Meyer double. A Tanner Kluis groundout added a run before Pfaff drove in Meyer with a double.
However that was all the scoring for Gold.
Couple that with the earlier miscues and you have a loss.
"We made some mistakes that gave them an extra base and an extra run," Weier said. "We had a throw get away from a cutoff person and rolls away - that gives them another runner in scoring position that turns out to be the winning run. Plus we do not tag out the runner at second base on the double steal."
Fairmont then tied the game and won the game in the top of the sixth.
