NEW ULM - The Sleepy Eye VFW baseball team showed off some line-up depth in its first game at the Junior Upper Midwest Classic.

Sleepy Eye had four different players collect two RBI each as it defeated New Ulm VFW Silver 11-0 Thursday at Johnson Park.

Sleepy Eye resumes action at 3 p.m. today when it plays Wayzata in Essig. Silver (2-9) plays Hutchinson at 4:30 p.m. today at Johnson Park.

Matt Berkner led the Sleepy Eye attack with three RBI. Jon Kopacek, Jay Helget and Austin Fischer also had two RBI each. Brandon Helget had three hits, including two doubles, and he scored two runs. Kopacek and Berkner also had two hits each as Sleepy Eye finished with 12 in the game.

"We got a lot of depth and we got a lot of older guys coming back this year," Brandon Helget said.

Jake Mielke went the distance and earned the win for Sleepy Eye. He allowed just three hits and struck out five.

"He's a solid pitcher, he got us some quick innings and got out of some jams and got the goose egg on the board," Brandon Helget said.

Michael Skillings took the loss for New Ulm. He went four innings, allowed five runs and seven hits.

The teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when Sleepy Eye broke the game open with five runs. Austin Fischer had a two-run single and Carter Krzmarzick followed with an RBI single. Berkner had an RBI double later in the inning.

Sleepy Eye added to the lead in the seventh, the big hits coming off the bats of Kopacek (two-run double) and Jay Helget (two-run single).

"I guess I was proud of my team with the number of zeroes we put up, holding them to no runs [for five of the innings]," Silver coach Bob Skillings said. "They had a couple innings where they put up no runs but otherwise I thought my players did an excellent job tonight."

Both teams resume action today.
