Follow rules for bicycle safety

July 3, 2013
The Journal

To the editor:

Bicyclists, children and adults alike, need to know that the rules of the road apply to them as well as autos. Stop signs and red lights mean you must STOP. Bicyclists need to ride with traffic, close to the curb and in single file.

Also, why aren't bicyclists using hand signals when making a turn? When turning left, place left arm straight out with a pointed finger before making a turn. For turning right, make an "L" shape with your left arm, with the fist up in the air before making a turn.

Drivers also need to be reminded about what theses hand signals mean.

Bicycle accidents are happening with greater frequency in Minnesota, let's not have any in New Ulm.
