For New Ulm, it was just a matter of running short of pitching arms. New Ulm's pitchers combined to hit five batters and walk seven more.
"We were a little low on pitching, but we did a decent job," New Ulm coach Derek Wilfahrt said. "We walked a few guys and hit a few guys, that's not what you want, but we battled and we had 12 hits off of a pretty good pitcher. We cleaned it up defensively, but the kids battled and we just couldn't get a clutch hit when we needed it."
New Ulm did take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Connor Forbrook's single scored Luke Irmiter. Fairmont scored three times in the top of the third off starter Bailey Batt, but New Ulm answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the third.
Fairmont re-took the lead in the fourth inning and held on the rest of the way. New Ulm scored a single run in the sixth inning but that was it for Gold.
Jarin Spence had three hits and two RBIs and Luke Irmiter had two hits. Alex Stark and Connor Forbrook each had two hits for Gold.
