NEW ULM - The 18th annual Brown County Relay for Life raised more than $103,430 on Friday night and Saturday morning, to help the American Cancer Society research ways to fight cancer.
The event featured more than 200 cancer survivors participating in the Survivor's Lap on Friday night, with 27 teams participating in the fundraising. The event concluded at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The top fundraising team was Citizens Bank with more than $17,000, followed by the New Ulm Medical Center team with more than $8,600. The top two fundraising individuals were Jeanne Kretsch with $3,606 and Beth Wendinger with $3,180, both with the Citizens Bank team.
Organizers of the event said they were very pleased with Friday's turnout and praised the good weather as a helpful factor.
The 18th annual Brown County Relay for Life on Friday night featured more than 4,000 luminaria, which were dedicated to those who survived or passed away from cancer. The organization has raised well over $1.6 million for cancer research during its existence. The organization has enjoyed exceeding the preceeding year's fundraising totals and totals for participants for several years.
