Arthur C. Aufderheide

Arthur C. Aufderheide died Friday, August 9, 2013 in Solvay Hospice House.

He was born September 9, 1922 to Herman and Esther Aufderheide and was raised in New Ulm, Minnesota.

He received most of his education in Minnesota including premedical studies at St. Olaf College, University of Minnesota Medical School and a pathology residency at the University of Minnesota. Arthur completed an internship at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, New York. He married Mary Buryk of International Falls, Minnesota in 1946 and served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1947 - 1949. Clinical positions held include Head of Pathology for the Minneapolis VA Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, Duluth and St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth. Teaching positions include professor at UMD Medical School from 1978-2009, head of the Medical School Pathology Department and Acting Dean from 1973-1974. He helped found the new scientific discipline of paleopathology with his research interests focused on paleoepidemiology. Together with his wife Mary, he pioneered the study of disease patterns in ancient populations. Dr. Aufderheide published four academic textbooks and more than 100 academic scientific articles. His avocational interests led him to the Arctic region including seven expeditions, living with an Inuit (Eskimo) family for three winters and a member of the Plaisted Polar Expedition to the North Pole in 1968. In collaboration with Jim Brandenberg he archived 15,000 feet of documentary film of Arctic cultures. His legacy will be eternal, living within his family, colleagues, students and all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Howard (Rose Mitchell) and Fred (Doris Rosenau).

Survivors include his wife Mary; daughter, Patricia (Steven Schwartzman); sons, Walter (Denise Holt), Tom (Ann Robertson) and grandsons, Elias and Gabriel Schwartzman and Arik Aufderheide.

A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, August 24, at the Kirby Student Center Plaza Ballroom on the UMD Campus followed by a reception with refreshments and hors d'oeuvres.
