Steven “Rocky” Riedel

WINTHROP - Steven "Rocky" Riedel, age 59, of Winthrop, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Memorial Services will be Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, 11 a.m.., at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop with Reverend Paul Tessmer officiating.

Gathering of Family and Friends will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday.

Steven "Rocky" James Riedel was born on Dec. 11, 1953, in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He was the son of Henry and Herta (Kobe) Riedel. Steven was baptized as an infant on Dec. 11, 1953, in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and was later confirmed in his youth on May 19, 1968, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. He received his education in Winthrop and was a 1972 graduate of the Winthrop High School.

On Dec. 19, 1987, Steven was united in marriage to Judy Schauer at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. After their marriage, the couple resided in Winthrop. Steven was employed at Fingerhut in Gaylord, Kraft Foods in New Ulm and Unidoor in Gaylord. In 2001, Steven became disabled due to lung disease. Steven and Judy shared 25 years of marriage.

Steven loved to talk about the good ole days; the people, the parties and the fast cars. He also enjoyed playing pool, cards, especially sheepshead and cribbage, softball, bowling, trapshooting and listening to music. "Free Bird" was one of his favorite songs. Steven also loved to fish. Going to Red Lake was one of his favorite walleye fishing spots.

As he eventually became homebound, he enjoyed a game machine that he had won, watching TV, doing crossword puzzles, reading and scratching off lottery tickets. He loved when family and friends would call or visit. He was very proud of all of his nieces and nephews. His two cats and Buddy, his dog, were also very important in his life. They gave him companionship and made him laugh daily.

Steven is survived by his wife, Judy Riedel of Winthrop; sister, Rosemarie White and her husband, Bruce of Winthrop; brothers, John Riedel and his wife, Shirley of Swansboro, NC, and Ralph Riedel of Mankato; mother-in-law, Betty Wagner of Winthrop; brother-in-law, Jeff Schauer and his wife, Kim of Winthrop; aunts, Ann Klockman of Ada, Marie Carlson of Winthrop, and Margaret Jungclaus of Lake Lillian; uncle, Fred "Fritz" Riedel of Hot Springs, SD; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephew, other relatives and friends.

Steven was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Amelia Riedel; parents, Henry and Herta Riedel; aunt, Katie Solmonson; uncles, Peter Riedel in infancy, John Riedel, Ben Riedel, William "Willie" Riedel, Edward "Eddie" Riedel and George Riedel; father-in-law, Glenn Schauer; niece, Sandy Riedel; and great-niece, Kendall White.
