New Ulm Mayor Bob Beussman and New Ulm Park and Recreation Director Tom Schmidtz were present for the ribbon cutting ceremony. They were joined by area skaters, who helped hold the ribbon.
Following the rededication, approximately two dozen local skates took to the half-pipe and rails to try out the redone park. Several skaters stated they appreciated the improvements.
The refurbishing of the park involved replacing the surfaces of the skating boxes and ramps with Skate Lite ramp surface and redoing the blacktop grounds of the park. Work crews from 3rd Lair skate park in Golden Valley helped install the ramp surfaces, and Ground Zero Services, of New Ulm, did the blacktop surface. The total cost of the project was $15,000.
The project was part of the New Ulm Park and Recreation Department's general projects for the park. Further improvements planned to be completed this year or next year include adding an open air shelter and lighting for evening use.
The skate park is open every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
