NEW ULM - Cathedral High School students' first day of school will be cut short today. The school administration has declared a "heat day," similar to a snow day in colder months.
Classes for grades 7-12 will be called off at 11:44 a.m. today in the high school building, which lacks air conditioning. Classes will meet for the full day at St. Anthony's Elementary, which has central air.
CHS Secretary Jane Nosbush said the first floor of Cathedral High School is fairly tolerable in warm weather, but the third floor becomes miserable as the heat rises and can't be evacuated from the building quickly enough.
The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny day with highs in the 90s today.
