WINTHROP - The GFW (Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop) School Board learned Monday that several students enrolled in the district in recent weeks, requiring the need for more paraprofessionals.
Superintendent Tami Martin said paraprofessional substitutes will be hired for the first two weeks of school to cover needs. After a week of school, principals will meet with special education teachers to determine exact needs and current staff allocation.
"Then we will formally post the determined need. Our goal is to interview potential candidates the second week of school ... and have a formalized schedule by the third week of school," Martin wrote in her board report.
In her report, Martin listed her 2013-14 goals are:
1. Support Q-Comp implementation by meeting monthly with site leaders, facilitate advisory council meetings for hiring and year-end meetings, assist career ladder positions with training and reporting and report to the board on implementation progress.
2. Do community outreach with visible monthly visits to all three communities, write monthly newspaper articles and participate in community events.
3. Provide instructional leadership with focus on student learning by assisting Professional Learning Community (PLC) teams, review data points, looking for ways to increase student achievement and opportunities and assist staff with professional development growth plans.
4. Create GFW opportunities by attending professional development sessions that offer different ways to deliver educational programming, support grant writing to fund innovative programs and work in an out of the district on program collaboration.
