NEW ULM - A new, 4-terabyte video server was installed Wednesday in the New Ulm Community Access Television (nuCAT) studio in the lower level of the New Ulm Public Library.
The new equipment will enhance the station's program scheduling capabilities, according to Community Cable Access Coordinator Mark E. Martinez.
The $27,000 high-powered media server with content storage and distribution ability, will allow nuCAT to do computerized recording and playback of cable cast videos with greater speed and accuracy. One terabyte equals about 1 trillion bytes or 1,024 gigabytes.

"We're calling it nuCAT 2.0, our first significant (equipment) upgrade," Martinez said.
NuCAT recorded its first TV show in its studio facility in the public library lower level on Sept. 23, 2008. It took over all community public access cable television channel programming responsibilities on April 1, 2009. NuCAT cable casts programs around the clock on Comcast Channel 14 and New Ulm Telecom Channel 3.
The City of New Ulm collects franchise fees from the two cable companies for the use of public right of way. Local cable subscribers pay fees as part of their cable bill. Cash and non-cash donations are accepted as approved by the New Ulm City Council.
The City of New Ulm, City Council and Cable Communications Advisory Board oversees nuCAT. Its staff is tasked with providing TV production training, facilities and equipment necessary to effectively communicate your ideas to the community, provide continuing education for trained nuCAT volunteers, and raise nuCAT awareness and build support among community members and organizations.
Operating hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday; 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. NuCAT is closed Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 359-8290.
